SpaceScan09 #26: Jóhann Kristinsson and Jabaman
Categories: Features • Iceland • Norway • Rock • Urban

It’s Friday and that means SpaceScan. This week it features two young, very different solo artists from Norway and Iceland. First up is Jabaman, a 20 year-old doing reggae and dancehall with a political stand, and then 20 year old singer/songwriter Jóhann Kristinsson, who serves his acoustic folk in a pleasingly sparse bedroom production. Enjoy!

Lately reggae and dancehall has been making a mark on the mainstream in Scandinavia and Jabaman aka Kristoffer Selvig should be next in line. The 20 year-old Norwegian knows his way around the genre and the good chorus and delivers his substantial, political lyrics in very authentic Jamaican patois (as far as I can judge, anyway).

Another young man in his early twenties Icelandic singer/songwriter Jóhann Kristinsson released his debut album ‘Call Jimmy’ in Iceland late last year. His weapon of choice to deliver his personal lyrics is lo-fi, acoustic folk coated in a pleasingly sparse bedroom production. Six album songs and two new are streaming on MySpace, so check him out.

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan (a) allscandinavian.com
