Q&A: The Works – Interrupting the Gods’ dialogue
Categories: Denmark • Features • Urban

A few weeks back we featured Danish beatheads The Works aka producers Terry Tester and Twelve Beats in our SpaceScan series. Their excellent fusion of hip hop and electronica really struck my nerve, so Terry Tester was handed the microphone to give us the lowdown on The Works while letting us in on a little secret.
Who?
“Hip hop producers Twelve Beats and Terry Tester. Plain and simply snappin’ necks day in, day out. Bustin’ beathead jams on a solo tip or indeed as the formidable duo The Works, we are among the most extraordinarily slept-on producers in the resurgent beats movement. However, that’s about to change…”
Where?
“2200, North Copenhagen, Denmark. We both migrated to the Danish capital in the early noughties and accidentally ended up living on the same block. Weird. We communicate by shouting out of windows. We exchange ideas via zip wire. Literally. Though based in Copenhagen our posse is large and extends all the way from London to L.A.. And definitely Yokohama.”
What?
“The Works is based on a shared understanding of sonics and hip hop/electronica aesthetics. It’s manifested with the release of the ‘Yokohama EP’, which was released digitally on Danish indie label Rust Music earlier this year. However, we are currently pushing a trolley around town hustling an ultra limited vinyl pressing, which we have produced ourselves in all secrecy. Shhh. This unofficial version is also in retail outside of Denmark at a very few selected international outputs; 720records.com and hhv.de. The ‘Yokohama EP’ is a fragmented symphony. It’s spirits known and unknown. It’s the metal hip that Prince needs to keep movin’. We do what we love. We die if we don’t. We’ve got day jobs. We don’t need to cash in on this stuff. In one word; quality.”
Why?
“Because there are tons of things you can do with a sampler and a drum machine. It satisfies our inherent urge to compose and create. It’s good for the soul, and it’s meaningful – at least to us. We always try to push things a little further. It’s a tentative answer to the question of what the Gods talk about on their vacations – or rather, it’s an interruption of their dialogue.”
