SpaceScan09 #31: Mammút and Silver Gleaming Sound Machine
Categories: Denmark • Features • Iceland • Pop • Rock

Our weekly Tour de MySpace, designed to bring you (and us) new musical experiences, takes us all to Iceland and Denmark this week, presenting the Reykjavik five piece Mammút and Aarhus based quartet Silver Gleaming Sound Machine. The first excel in chilling guitar driven rock with dazzling pop moments, the latter in irresistible synth-pop. Enjoy!

I was tipped about this Icelandic quintet a fortnight ago and thank David for that. Mammút have released two albums so far, an eponymous debut in 2006 and ‘Karkari’ last year – the latter to high critical praise and judging by the sound on MySpace it seems every bit deserved. Rock is the game, immediately gripping but always challenging and topped with brilliant pop moments (check out ’Raudilaekur’) with their at all times impressively elegant guitar work and lead singer Kata’s expressive vocal chilling highlights.

These guys and one girl formed in 2008 and already they have released two EP’s with what they’ve dubbed krautpop. The Aarhus based quartet are working on a full length and promises are definitely being made by their latest effort, ‘All Tomorrow’s Gardens’ (released this June), which impresses with an irresistible pop sensibility draped in psychedelic synth robes. Four songs off the new EP and two from their eponymous first are streaming on MySpace and they are well worth your time.

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan (a) allscandinavian.com
