Delay Trees: Soft Construction EP
Categories: Albums • Finland • Rock

Back in April Finnish quartet Delay Trees were kind enough to share their amazing ‘Tarantula/Holding On’ from their debut release, ‘Soft Construction EP’, with me (and consequently you). This song has since then repeatedly brought me into an elated, happy-sad frame of mind, and a while ago the album, to my profound pleasure, came in to my possession. It’s mellow, blue and emotional indiepop-rock, to a certain extend reminiscing 60s folk rock while sporting bits of psychedelia, reverb surf-rock and discord aesthetics here and there.
Defining tracks are album opener ‘Desert Island Song’ which is just as bleak as its title, and ‘About Brothers’, an existential account of brothers drifting apart as adulthood sets in. ‘Coral Wind’ takes us on a mind-trip to the great American plains, while aforementioned ‘Tarantula/Holding On’ have despair and hope walk hand in hand with the line: “Can you remember when / 10 years ago / I was tangled up with fear / You’ve never felt” and its spine-tingling “holding on” crescendo. All carried by principal songwriter, guitarist and lead singer Rami Vierula’s gently bleeding vocal.
With ‘Soft Construction EP’ Delay Trees aka Lauri Järvinen, Sami Korhonen, Onni Oikari and Rami Vierula have constructed a small masterpiece. It really is as simple as that…
