SpaceScan09 #37: Accidents Never Happen and Jaakko & Jay
Categories: Features • Finland • Norway • Rock

Friday, SpaceScan – you know the drill… This week I’m happy to present a Finnish guitar/drums duo serving up a little revolutionary folk punk, and a Norwegian quartet who dabbles in post-punk. The first are Jaakko & Jay from Tampere, the latter Accidents Never Happen who’ve set up camp in Oslo again after a couple of years in Liverpool.
Jaakko & Jay (SF)
Two guys, one singing and playing guitar, one sweating and playing drums (well, just snare and a cymbal, but guess it qualifies), explosive energy like a South African (fe)male on the 800m, lyrics on drinking and revolution, and statements like “‘Politician’ is dangerously close to ‘police’”. That would sum up Finnish folk punk duo Jaakko & Jay nicely. So consider it done and then go check them out!

Four Norwegian fellows, one of them (Magne Mostue) an excellent singer, and a big love for post-punk and especially Joy Division is what Accidents Never Happen are all about. It might not be unique, but less has been known to do it – and these guys do put their own appealing spin on a well tested formula. The quartet released their debut ‘Oslo Beat’ in 2006 and an eponymous second this April.

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan (a) allscandinavian.com
