The Asteroids Galaxy Tour: Fruit
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Rock

High profile fans like Amy Winehouse and Apple chairman Steve Jobs – who have selected The Asteroids Galaxy Tour as opening act and sound to an iPod Touch commercial respectively – have been part of the hype surrounding these Danes the past year, and yesterday they released their debut ‘Fruit’ on their own label Small Giants.
Singer Mette Lindberg and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer etc Lars Iversen are at the core of the stellar travelers, and they each shine in one characteristic aspect of their joint universe: Lindberg with her dominant, unique voice, ranging from pure sex to (snotty) little girl, and Iversen with his impressive sense of (playful) detail in the production, elegantly combining Stax/Motown soul with the pop sounds of today.
‘Fruit’ is a debut for better and worse, the latter expressed by a monotonous half album. However, we can live with that in this new singles age when The Asteroids Galaxy Tour offer songs like the insisting, psychedelic horn treat ‘Push The Envelope’, loose ‘n funky ‘The Golden Age’ with its New Orleansy piano lick, brilliant ballad ‘Hero’, and obvious hit ‘The Sun Ain’t Shining No More’, its beat and feel a hybrid of Smash Mouth’s ‘Walking On The Sun’ and The Roots’ ‘The Seed’.
