SpaceScan08 #3: Plök, Roger Græsberg and Dánjal

Categories: DenmarkFaroe IslandsFeaturesNorwayRock

Words:

Dánjal

A mailman from Norway gone acid-country, three very competent (and slightly mad) Danes and a Faroese castigating the Western world. Yes, Sirs and Madams, this weeks SpaceScan is indeed a diverse tour and our hope is that you will join ALL SCANDINAVIAN in enjoying Plök, Roger Græsberg & The Anti-Music Bonanza and Dánjal.

Plök (DK)
Danish math-rock trio Plök have listed Tetris and sugar as some of their influences and say they sound like Rick James on crack. That should at least arouse curiosity (No? Skip this then and move on) and if you follow THIS LINK you can judge the mad, incredibly competent three-piece yourself. Fans of Primus and Mr. Bungle stand a good chance of loving Plök, who are working on their full length debut as we interact. They wont tell us what it’s gonna be, but if it’s anything like the five songs online (all from last year’s EP ‘You Tie a Rock To Your Leg Cuz It Fits You’) it shall indeed be fine!

Roger Græsberg & The Anti-Music Bonanza (NO)
Roger Græsberg, a former mailman hailing from Kongsvinger in Norway, is really something. What he is not, is a good singer or musician. He’s got, however, a unique talent for songwriting, something he proves in pretty much every genre between neo-folk, country, pop and Casio-bossa. Roger Græsberg’s universe sounds like it’s made up of a series of bad acid trips and the execution of the songs is so sloppy that it transcends bad, goes full circle and become at the very least insanely entertaining.

Dánjal (FO) (Photo)
A musical cousin to Budam (featured in SpaceScan08 #1), Faroese singer Dánjal draws on the legacy of among others Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen, creating an enticing musical mix of folk, tango and Balkan, not least in ‘The Big Wheel Keeper’ and ‘Down In A Hole’. Lyrically he’s not afraid to touch on heavy subjects like religion and, as he explains, “often express an ironical distance to the western narrow minded view on the world”. Dánjal is definitely worth keeping eyes and ears on – so go do it. Now. Click HERE!

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop MySpace-links to: spacescan@allscandinavian.com
