Top 10@10: Best of 2010 - the Danish edition

December 10 and time for 2009s last Top 10@10, this one quite different from the others featured throughout the year. Because we’re rather lazy we’ve decided to combine the Top 10 with our 2010 preview series (Finland found here and Iceland here) presenting some Danish bands and artists set to be making their mark on 2010. Check them out, let us know what you think and share your own in the comments below.

The Politics
Yesterday trio The Politics (formerly Rubberhead Banditz) signed a worldwide deal with Sony RCA in the US – which I believe is the first time ever a Danish band signs directly to a major over there. With backing like that the gang’s sure to get attention, but there’s no doubt they can put Sony’s money where their mouths are with their very catchy and funky electro-punk. If you live in or around New York you can catch The Politics live January 20 before they head to the UK for a 23 gig tour. (PK)

Clonecircle
Clonecircle is a great if somewhat unknown metal band with a sound á la Rammstein/Marilyn Manson which “combines elements of cold industrial beats, gothic decay, structural synth and massive guitars into a powerful metal hybrid”. So no sing-alongs then. The band is to release their sophomore album ‘Behind The Wire’ January 11, but I’ve had a chance to listen to it already and it is really quite brilliant. What’s that? You’d like a taste as well? Don’t worry. Although hating to toot my own horn I have managed to secure a track exclusively for ALL SCANDINAVIAN for your listening pleasure. You’re welcome. (TB)

The Kissaway Trail
March 1 quintet The Kissaway Trail will release their sophomore effort ‘Sleep Mountain’ in Europe followed by North America March 16. An excellent first single titled ‘SDP’ is out and by the sound of that we can expect a darker expression and more rock oomph compared to their acclaimed eponymous debut. (PK)

Marvel Hill
This year I’ve been re-digging Marvel Hill’s angst-ridden electro-rock debut, ‘Heartless Is More’ (2007), with a vengeance. Because it’s awesome! According to the original plan a followup should have been released this fall, but was postponed to sometime in 2010 for unknown reasons. However, the first single and grandiose ballad, ‘Kiss/Bite’, has been out for quite some time and it has me expecting more awesomeness coming our way. (PK)

Negash Ali
He’s taken Denmark by storm with his funky, soulful debut album ‘Asmarino’ this year and come February – a year after the Danish release – young rapper Negash Ali will see it released in the US through record label Raw Poetix. The 18 year-old is an extraordinary talent with enormous potential and he stands every chance of being a very happy camper when the 2010 results are in. (PK)

Rock Hard Power Spray
Tricky one, this. The punksters in Rock Hard Power Spray are skilled musicians and I’m quite sure that they are able to write a massive hit or two if they could be arsed to do it. But at the same time they are way too punk to do what is expected of them so their third album might be really, really good or really, really weird. It will be punk, though… (TB)

Vinnie Who
Funky, extravagant, androgynous and great. Along with producer Lasse Lyngbo, Vinnie Who aka Niels Bagge puts sexy-cool back in disco and even though there is no information on a release yet (a deal is inked with EMI), I dare say that this young Dane will be making a solid mark on 2010. (PK)

Volbeat
The metal’n’rollers have accomplished the rare feat of putting out three high quality albums in a row (no difficult second here), and despite a gruelling tour schedule Volbeat plans on putting out their fourth early next year. Judging from the single ‘A Warrior’s Call’ and the new track they played at Roskilde Festival they haven’t changed one bit – but hey, if it ain’t broke and yada yada. I’m looking very much forward to the new album. (TB)

Efterklang
Another band who will be exploring new auditory territory in 2010 are Efterklang, who recently let the world in on details on their third studio full length, ‘Magic Chairs’, which will be released February 22. At the same time they offered a first free taste of what’s to come with the marvelous single ‘Modern Drift’, which has made it hard not to expect utter greatness. (PK)

Raunchy
I quite liked Raunchy’s latest effort ‘Wasteland Discoteque’ that cleverly fused pop hooks and bad ass metal. I also quite liked their previous album ‘Death Pop Romance’ from 2006. And the one before that. So there is really no reason why their 2010 album shouldn’t kick ass as well. No sounds have escaped the studio yet, but you can follow the progress on the band’s blog right here: raunchy-blog.blogspot.com. (TB)
