Q&A: Clonecircle – Man, machine and the dark side of life
Categories: Denmark • Features • Metal

Last week Danish goth metal quartet Cloncecircle released their awesome sophomore effort ‘Behind The Wire’, and today singer/bassist – and for a metal musician pretty awesomely named – Martin Hellgren gives you the Who, Where, What and Why as they play out for the four guys in the underworld that shapes the surface.
Who?
“We are Clonecircle. We are guides on musical journeys to the dark engine rooms and the cellars of industry where man and machine are fused together into a bastard of a metal hybrid. We are messengers and bringers of tales from the unwanted underground that shapes the world as we know it. And we invite you to take the tour…”
Where?
“We’re Danish and still proud of it, despite the way the country has presented itself in recent years. That being said, we don’t feel that our music is especially Danish. Besides some American influences we are essentially a European band that draws its inspiration from a European mindset and way of thinking. We speak from the old world.”
What?
“We play gothic and industrial metal. Basically we work from a metal frame of riffs and guitar based chords and while the moods and feelings of the music often take a dark and gothic turn, the tools are often the mechanized sounds of industrial samples and programming. We do a lot of the song writing in the studio and that surely shows, but metal guitars and melodic vocals are never far away. A lot of our inspiration is drawn both from the absurdities of modern mass media and the fear and cynicism it projects, as well as our personal encounters with the backside of the world around us.”
Why?
“Because we need it! The music grows from a need to express experiences with the darker sides of existence in a way that will recharge you instead of consuming you. And music can communicate that empowering feeling better than most other things. This is our music of choice and we will play it no matter what – if someone wants to listen it’s just all the greater. That aside we want to do shows that we would like to see ourselves. A lot of bands seem to miss the visual side completely. We want to deliver a complete show with a very visual approach that underlines the music and creates a unified experience. So check us out if you like melody backed by metal guitars and dark atmospheres and if you’re ready for a trip into the underworld that shapes the surface!”
