SpaceScan10 #8: John Doe Secret and HyPNO
Categories: Electronica • Features • Finland • Iceland • Rock

Friday, SpaceScan and two Scandinavian acts for you to (hopefully) enjoy. First up young Icelandic DJ/producer HyPNO aka Kári Guðmundsson who’s in to dubstep and dub, and he’s followed by Finnish rock outfit John Doe Secret, who – for whatever reason – have taken a wow of secrecy, neatly suggested by their name. Read, listen and let us know what you think.
HyPNO (ISL) (Photo)
He started with classical guitar aged 9 and at 14 he got in to electronica by way of hip hop. Today HyPNO aka Kári Guðmundsson creates excellently gloomy dub and dubstep incorporating elements of early 90s hip hop and inspiration found in the Icelandic weather, specifically the shortage of daylight. As he says here: “It really fucks you up.”

John Doe Secret (SF)
Their name is a very fine description of how much information I’ve been able to find on Finnish outfit John Doe Secret; Zero, zilch, zip. Anyway, I like their slightly theatrical mix of rhythm & blues, new wave and surf-rock, especially in ‘Only The Strong Will Survive’, ‘Tokyo’ and ‘Casanova Love’ which are three of five songs streaming on MySpace.

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan (a) allscandinavian.com
