This Is Head: 0001
Categories: Albums • Rock • Sweden

Perhaps it’s a consequence of the instrumental nature of about half their songs, perhaps it’s a lack of imagination. Or, perhaps it’s an artistic statement. Either way the decision to number their songs instead of giving them titles is one making perfect sense when diving in to Malmö quartet This Is Head’s enticing musical time capsule that is their debut ‘0001’ (named after their first song, which didn’t make it on the album).
Because it is machinelike and repetitive with an electronic feel, building on krautrock, new wave and post-punk with acts like Talking Heads, Yeasayer, Neu!, compatriots Studio and The Bear Quartet all chipping in along with Kraftwerk and U2 (opening track ‘0009’ sounds like a new wave Kraftwerk jamming with early U2). Yet it’s organic and emotional in a rather bleak and melancholic big city/great plains way.
At home people are calling Adam Jacobsson, Henric Claesson, Björn Wiking and Tom Malmros one of Sweden’s new big bands. There’s a good chance they could be right, at least This Is Head are off to an incredibly good start. ‘0001’ is an album to dance, or at least groove, to, think to, get lost in, and I just love the sound and feel of the whole thing.
