Indonesia salutes Scandinavian music

On April 10 Scandinavian music will take over the Indonesian capital Jakarta by proxy. On the day 15 local bands will play the music of Mew (photo), Sigur Rós, Immanu El and Röyksopp among others at the event SUPER YOUTH 2!!! – Scandinavia (A Tribute to Scandinavian Indiepop/Indierock), and I have had a short email chat with one of the three guys behind this very cool idea, Iswantoro Wirawan.
Tell us about SUPER YOUTH 2!!!. What’s the concept?
“It’s a small gig with a low budget arranged by me and two friends. It’s intended to profile new indie bands from the local scene in and around Jakarta while being a tribute to Scandinavian indie.”
Why Scandinavian music?
“I am a fan of Scandinavian indiepop and indierock and many young people involved in the local indie scene are influenced by Scandinavian music. The Swedish label Labrador introduced Indonesia to Swedish indie in the 2000s with bands like Club 8 and Edson.”
Is Scandinavian music big in Indonesia?
“Bands like The Cardigans, Mew, Kings Of Convenience and Sigur Rós are very big. We have Indonesian Frengers (Mew fans), Sigur Rós Lovers, Kings Of Convenience Indonesia and many more fan bases. Each has more than 1000 members, active and passive, and they keep growing.”
Will you do more gigs like this in the future?
“This is the first time I arrange this event, but I’m working on a tribute to Mew called MEWPHORIA, also in Jakarta. If SUPER YOUTH 2 is a success we will do another tribute to Scandinavian indie.”
