Boil: A New Decay
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Rock

The ALL SCANDINAVIAN concept is that we only review albums we like. So obviously the new album from Danish quintet Boil is good, but I nevertheless feel the urge to stress that it’s really, really good. Really. The musical style is progressive rock somewhat similar to Tool, Incubus (before they became boring) and Alice In Chains, but despite the 90s-ish influences the album sounds remarkably fresh and contemporary.
When you dig in to the album you keep finding something new and cool in the multilayered and complex songs that effortlessly blend crunching guitar riffs, frequent tempo changes and melancholic tunes. The band is great, but the greatest attraction is vocalist Jacob Løbner. Check out the track ’Sleepwalker’ – I don’t think I’ve ever heard a grown man that close to crying while still being totally rock’n’roll (Yes, Chris Martin is on the brink of tears all the time. No, he is not rock’n’roll. No, neither is Thom Yorke).
Actually the only complaint I have about Boil is on their MySpace-page. It’s perfectly fine, but for some reason the tracks in the player are some of the weaker songs on the album. On the other hand: If you like what you hear on MySpace you will soil your pants when you buy the album…
