SpaceScan08 #11: Saine, ORKA and Mellophone
Categories: Denmark • Electronica • Faroe Islands • Features • Finland • Rock

Acid jazz electronica, rock and something, in lack of better terms, labelled electronica is the essence of SpaceScan number 11. Featured are Finnish composer Lauri Saine, Danish quartet Mellophone plus Faroese outfit ORKA, and the hope is that you’ll find (or take) time to dive into and hopefully enjoy these three great acts.
ORKA (FO) (Photo)
Homemade instruments build by ORKA founder Jens L. Thomsen and friends using scrap material and power tools. Yes, you’re in for treat with this Faroese outfit and the six songs from debut album ‘Livandi Oyða’ (2007) available on their MySpace. It’s utterly original, a little more than slightly mad (living on islands in the Atlantic has a powerful effect on creative minds) and transcends any and all genre descriptions. For now we’ll label it electronica, but don’t let that scare you away or get your expectations in a certain direction. These guys are to be met with an open and curious mind. Ready? Then CLICK!
Mellophone (DK)
Aarhus-based quartet Mellophone have been at it since 2001, releasing two promo albums in the process and now working on finishing their debut proper. Their music builds on 60s and 70s American rock with drops of country and surf, creating great songs that immediately catches and just keeps on growing. And then the qualities of singer Thomas Eskild-Jensen has to be emphasized: In vocal span, control and empathy he’s one of Denmark’s finest male singers. Now check out the three songs available on their MySpace.
Saine (SF)
From Finland comes 25 year old Lauri Saine, who released his debut album ‘Imagine This’ last year and in a short while will release his second full length effort, ‘Break A Pattern’. It’s all instrumental, spiced up with a few vocal samples, and Saine’s take on electronica isn’t entirely unlike the 1990s acid jazz in funky, upbeat tracks ‘Donny’ and ‘Voodoo’, while ‘The Morning Hour’ and ‘A Little Something’ (which would fit nicely on the soundtrack to ‘The Big Blue pt. 2’, should Luc Besson decide to make a sequel) takes you on beautiful journeys of the mind and heart.

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan@allscandinavian.com
