Kellermensch: Narcissus
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Rock

When bands proclaim that they want to “look inward” and “think about who they really are” their albums tend to be dark and depressing. Danish dark-men Kellermensch are opposite. According to frontman Sebastian Wolff, their new EP ‘Narcissus’ is a chance to wrestle with the band’s demons, but since their eponymous debut album is dark enough to make Tom Waits sound like Spice Girls, the looking inward means that the new songs are quite chipper, almost cheerful. Well, by Kellermensch standards anyway.
The EP contains four new tracks that are great but very different from the songs on ‘Kellermensch’. The first single, ‘Army Ants’, has a distinct Bruce Springsteen-ish feel to it, ’30 Silver Coins’ sound like The Smiths if Morrissey was in a shouty mood, and ‘Rattle The Bones’ is an almost dancable classic rock anthem. Quite confusing – and quite exciting.
The EP also contains four live tracks (including a cover of TV On The Radio’s ‘Wolf Like Me’) taken from the BBC Radio 1 Session the band played in January. Kellermensch concerts are a dark and mesmerizing experience and that feeling is obviously hard to capture on an album, but the BBC Session does come pretty damn close. Especially ‘Moribund Town’ and ‘All Time Low’ are awesome, but just like their debut album ‘Narcissus’ has no weak links so there’s no point in just picking two or three songs. Do buy the whole package.
