Bleak

Legendary Seattle label Sub Pop, who launched grunge greats like Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney, are celebrating their 20. anniversary this year (congrats, by the way, and thanks!). We mention it mainly to almost elegantly lead you in to this week’s SpaceScan which in fact touches on the 1990s and grunge with Finnish quintet Bleak and Danish rockers Superfuzz who, 10 years on from their debut, are ready to release their second album.

So, whatever happened to grunge? Well, the genre might no be as big as it was in the 90s, but it is alive and well, and is in fact experiencing a bit of a bloom these days. One of the bands that hold on to flannel shirts, Weltschmertz and melodic choruses is Finnish outfit Bleak. The band released their debut album to generally good reviews in 2007 and are currently working on the follow-up. Judging from the songs on their MySpace it will be worth the wait.

Superfuzz (DK)
Danish Superfuzz released their debut album in 1997 which made the band quite popular and earned them a Grammy in 1998. And then they disappeared. Now, 10 years later, the boys are back in town and will release their second album ‘Streets Of Copenhagen’ on November 17, even giving it away for free on www.superfuzz.dk. Until then check out their MySpace and especially ‘Pantomime’ – a happy-go-lucky rock track with a guitar melody that will stay in your head for a week. At least.

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan@allscandinavian.com
