Messy Shelters: Abandonship
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Rock

They’ve gone and dunnit again, Danish label Tigerspring. A couple of months back they released the brilliant symphonic alt-pop act Choir Of Young Believers’ debut and now they give us the equally gifted Danish one man band Messy Shelters and his debut EP, ‘Abandonship’.
That these two acts are released by the same label seems no coincidence. Stylistically they touch on much of the same ground with Messy Shelters (aka Aarhus based Mikkel Bolding) being, well, the messier of the two production-wise, adding a gritty edge to his airy compositions.
Musically they both write magnificent songs, Mikkel Bolding’s absolute highlights among the five on this EP being opener ‘Wandering, Wondering’ (with a little nod to Arcade Fire), ‘Behind’ sporting dark, low-key rock melancholy a la Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on their album ‘Howl’ (2005), and eerie blues ‘Roll Over Reason’ with its contrasting catchy chorus.
All there’s left to do for now is muster our patience and look forward to a full length Messy Shelters release.
