Superfuzz

Free music rocks. Superfuzz rocks more. Because, not only have the Danish melodic indierock outfit created a darn good album – they actually give it away! Time will show if this is a sound financial decision, but in terms of goodwill this could be a smart move.

Superfuzz released their eponymous debut album in 1998. The album was received well among critics and fans and the band won a Danish Grammy in 1999. A few years after they just sort of disappeared… Until guitarist, producer and long time Superfuzz fan Søren Andersen three years ago hooked up with Superfuzz frontman and songwriter Michael Gersdorff and suggested to revive the band.

After recording five tracks in Copenhagen studio The Club, Superfuzz lost all their gear – and almost the five tracks – when The Club burned down to the ground. However, a crafty technician was able to save the songs from the hard disk of a melted Mac computer and the band played on…

So, the album has been on its way for a long time and the band has gone through rough times during the recording. Is it any good then? Yep. ‘Streets of Copenhagen’ is filled with classic rock with a twist. You won’t find any ‘hits’ here in the classic sense of the word but a lot of tracks will slowly crawl under your skin – and stay there.

One of the nifty things about Superfuzz (besides, obviously, their generosity) is the complexity of their songs. Complexity for complexity’s own sake isn’t something to strive for. But it is pretty cool to hear a song for the fourth or fifth time and discover a guitar twang that came out of nowhere or a weird little bass line you didn’t realise was there the first time.
