SpaceScan10 #33: Astro Can Caravan and Philco Fiction
Categories: Alternative • Features • Finland • Norway

Continuing our tour of MySpace, this Friday we’ve got alternative pop and space jazz for your lucky ears. The first is offered by Norwegian trio Philco Fiction, who released their debut album back in April, and the latter by Finnish nine-man collective Astro Can Caravan, who’s released quite a bit, but not really recently. Hope you’ll like it…
Philco Fiction (NO) (Photo)
They came to life as a duo under the name Id in 2003, and back in April Philco Fiction – now a trio – released their debut album ‘Give Us To The Lions’. For some lame reason (there are no good ones) they only offer snippets of their sweet alternative pop, fronted by the great vocal of Turid Alida Solberg, on MySpace, so go here instead to check out and download ‘Gone. Rhythm Pond’ and ‘Dan iel’ (in the player). Oh, by the way: “Last Ned” means download…

Astro Can Caravan (SF)
They’ve been around since 2001, Finnish collective Astro Can Caravan (today counting nine members), and last year – or 2008 depending on whether you look at their website or MySpace – they released the ‘The Nagual Julian EP’, which is streaming in full on MySpace along with two live recordings and three older songs. It’s space jazz from a groovy place between Ethiopia and Herbie Hancock, loaded with horns and percussion, and just really, really cool.

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan (a) allscandinavian.com
