Vinnie Who: Then I Met You
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Pop

We’ve been following Vinnie Who aka Niels Bagge since January 2009 and been happy to witness the attention surrounding the early-twenties Dane build to hype (because we believe he deserves it, and it kinda makes us look good), also thanks to his and his band’s awesome live performance skills. I’ve finally gotten my hands on his debut album ‘Then I Met You’, the title suggesting a life altering encounter which – if you ignore the lyrics of the title track – could refer to producer Lasse Lyngbo (White Pony, Diefenbach etc), who’s played an important role in shaping the Vinnie Who sound.
So, is it all we hoped for? Pretty much. Fillers do occupy a few of the eleven slots on the album, and part of me miss some of the gritty oomph from his and Lyngbo’s early tracks (check out ‘The Fall’ here and ‘Ain’t Going Nowhere’ here). That said, ‘Then I Met You’ is a really strong debut of danceable, funky neo-disco, rich on hooks and carried by Bagge’s excellent falsetto vocal, with highlights in disco-bangers ‘Game On’, ‘What You Got Is Mine’, ‘Accident Or Will’ and ‘Remedy’ plus the seven-minute LCD Soundsystem-esque ‘Rise With You’.
The future looks a bright shining mirrorball for Vinnie Who…
