Delay Trees: Delay Trees
Categories: Albums • Finland • Rock

I’ve been throwing superlatives at Finnish quartet Delay Trees since April 2009, when they knocked me off my feet with the awesome track ‘Tarantula/Holding On’. They did it again when their seven song debut, ‘Soft Construction EP’, reached me in August last year, and now they are close to completely exhaust my superlatives arsenal (also a consequence of English being my second language) with their first full length simply titled ‘Delay Trees’. Yes, it really is that great!
Over ten songs “about dreams, depression, lost friends, Helsinki nights and the rapture,” according to lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Rami Vierula, the quartet offer majestic yet mellow, insanely pleasant yet chillingly melancholic indiepop with a dreamy disposition (in no small part thanks to their beautiful harmonies), always kept in tight reigns by the dexterous rhythm section and given life and depth by – I have to emphasize it again – Vierula’s moving, gently bleeding vocal.
It’s like this: Every once in a while you come across a band or an artist that you instantly connect with, be it on a musical or emotional level – or both. For me the latter is the case with Delay Trees. Their sound and songs have really hit me in every way, and I’m extremely impressed with how coherent and still varied their expression is. I said that they’d constructed a small masterpiece with the ‘Soft Construction EP’. This is a bigger one…
