The Megaphonic Thrift: Decay Decoy
Categories: Albums • Norway • Rock

Alternative (noise-)rock outfit The Megaphonic Thrift released their debut EP ‘A Thousand Years Of Deconstruction’ last year, and earlier this year this full length titled ‘Decay Decoy’ followed in their native Norway. I haven’t heard the first, but I’m really excited about the latter, and I imagine that most fans of alternative, noisy rock will be. Because this is awesome stuff.
Comprised of members of Casiokids (Fredrik Vogsborg, drums), The Low Frequency In Stereo (Njål Clementsen, guitar, and Linn Frøkedal, bass and vocal) and Stereo 21 (Richard Myklebust, vocal and guitar), the Bergen quartet share common ground with fellow Norwegians Motorpsycho and Izakaya Heartbeat with influences found in Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., but they are very much their own.
Particularly striking is their songwriting. The always perfectly dosed and perfectly dramatic guitar noise explosions are lend weight and effect by their great sense of pop, resulting in brilliant moments like ‘Talks Like A Weed King’, ‘Candy Sin’, ‘The Undertow’, ‘Queen Of Noise’ and ‘Dragon Vs Dust’, Myklebust’s voice at times making it sound like Beck doing what it is The Megaphonic Thrift do.
Boiled down ‘Decay Decoy’ really is nothing short of impressive.
