SpaceScan08 #17: Kira Kira, Baskery, Giana Factory, Eivør Pálsdóttir, Unni Wilhelmsen and Le Corps Mince de Françoise

2008s final SpaceScan comes in a heavily expanded version to mark the occasion, and what better way of saying “goodbye for now, back in January” than with a celebration of the beautiful half of the population? I couldn’t think of one, so without further ado ALL SCANDINAVIAN presents six female bands and solo artists for your listening pleasure.
Kira Kira (ISL)
With a laptop, a thumb piano and loads of different toys as the main ingredients Icelandic Kira Kira aka Kristín Björk Kristjánsdóttir create her very own brand of experimental electronica, intensely beautiful, dark and really eccentric in the best possible sense.
Le Corps Mince de Françoise (SF) (Photo)
For some reason this trio from Helsinki, Finland, are still unsigned, but I can’t believe they will stay that for long. M.I.A meets Lady Sovereign meets Peaches in Mia, Emma and Malin’s gritty electropunk topped with a little 1990s eurodance and shitloads of attitude.
Baskery (SE)
Another trio, this time from Stockholm, Sweden, but in a whole other sphere than the Fins above. Baskery released their acclaimed debut ‘Fall Among Thieves’ in May and their alternative country with a little punk attitude is excellent!
Eivør Pálsdóttir (FO)
I was told by a Faroese journalist a couple of years back, that Eivør Pálsdóttir was bigger than Björk in Iceland. It’s never been confirmed, but the young Faroese folk songstress is in no way inferior to her Icelandic colleague. Known for her interpretations of old Faroese myths and folk ballads her voice is simply stunning.
Unni Wilhelmsen (NO)
Singer/songwriter Unni Wilhelmsen has been an established artist in her native Norway since releasing her award winning debut ‘To Whom It May Concern’ in 1996. Since then she’s released five albums with delightfully melancholic pop songs, and she’s definitely worth a dedicated listen.
Giana Factory (DK)
This Danish quartet isn’t an all girl group, admitted, but three-fourths are women so… Consisting of Loui Foo (yes, she’s related to The Raveonettes’ Sharin), Lisbet Fritze, Sofie Rasmussen and male drummer David Ciccia, Giana Factory excel in great, generally gloomy no-nonsense indierock with bits of electronica in the mix.

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan@allscandinavian.com

The Micragirls (SF) – if you have just a tiny place in your heart for garage rock you must check this frantic trio from Kuopio. Pretty different from the above mentioned, they are in their own world, which nevertheless could appeal to many. They have a new album coming up this year. http://www.myspace.com/micragirls
Thanks for the tip, Anna. Will check them out…
Hey,
I love scandinavian music, but could you just tell my name under the photo.
You cut it and it’s ugly like that. I’m choosing my frames, my borders. It’s not your role to ruin them.
So please, steal my entire photo, not a piece of it !
Fuck you !
Le Corps Mince de Françoise, I love you !
.
Hi Guillaume,
I’ve also sent this reply to you in an email.
You are credited for the photo in the alt-text (hover the mouse over the pic and you’ll see). Unfortunately my current design doesn’t allow for me to add a visible credit, and this design is also the reason I had to cut your picture. I do appreciate that you’ve made some choices concerning expression, borders and frames etc, and I do appreciate how annoying it must be to see it cut. However, this is unfortunately part of the game, which I’m sure you’re aware of judging by your impressive portfolio.
I used your picture, because at the time – as I recall – there was no other useful alternatives Le Corps photo-wise. I can see that has changed now, so I’ll gladly remove yours and never use your work again, should you so wish.
Best,
Peter
