The William Blakes

Rules are usually not compatible with anarchy, but in the case of Danish trio The William Blakes one rule of engagement has been the basis of the controlled anarchistic creative environment in which they’ve created this excellent debut.

The rule is as simple as it is dangerous artistically if the people involved aren’t on the same pages: You can’t say no to any idea put forth by your band members. They call it an anarchistic dictatorship and in this case it sounds to have worked perfectly, with members Kristian Leth and brothers Fridolin and Frederik Nordsø all on the same pages.

Their band name is a tribute to renowned British romanticist poet, painter and visionary mystic, William Blake (1757-1827), whose work has been a strong influence on the lyrics, while the album is a tribute to The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne (and his band). Something easily heard along with other self-proclaimed references like Arcade Fire and Talking Heads.

Recorded, arranged, mixed – and some songs written while in the studio – in just six days, ‘Wayne Coyne’, which is also the first release on their own label Speed Of Sound (Are We Brothers?, Le Fiasko etc), is a remarkable indierock album actually making heavy subjects like politics, religion, fear and life sound enjoyable with extravagant arrangements coated in semi-psychedelic colors.

Like the folk and swerving synths second track, ‘Violent God’ (playing below), that sports one of the more sensible statements I’ve heard in a while (“I don’t believe in a violent god / I don’t believe in anyone who forces me to believe”), a religious sentiment echoed in ‘Science Is Religion’ with the equally sensible question “Why can’t we agree to disagree?”.

It may all sound like a case of naïve romanticism, however, put to The William Blakes’ music and delivered with often near hysterical, but candor vocals ‘Wayne Coyne’ lifts you from the ground and takes you to places you’ll find very hard to leave. I know I don’t really want to…

Bonus info: The cover depicts Wayne Coyne’s face on William Blake’s body, and is designed by Danish synthrockers Spleen United’s Kasper Nørlund. The William Blakes are already set to release their second effort, due out February 23.

  1. Hi,

sees the release of a two-year project by Fernand Péna, a privately released CD based on Blake’s poetry and titled “Ode to William Blake”.
    http://www.lezarts.info/
Numerous excellent research and studies have been written to publicize the work of William Blake, ideas, beliefs, visions, spirituality … … ..
This project from Fernand Pena “Ode to William Blake” has no other ambition but to participate in this action.
“Even if my knowledge of the English language is very limited, I discovered each day –reading, working on his poems and singing them- the expression of universal Truth:
Human Being is everything.” F. Pena
Péna, who has been a musician and singer since 1968 in bands.
As Blake proves it, the experimentation of this theory goes trough art, poesy, music, liberty, intangible factors.
live in Tate Britain London, november 28:

please, tell us what you think about this project (music, voice & mind)

    be happy
