Betting On The Mouse: BOTM
Categories: Albums • Alternative • Denmark

In January 2010 I featured this Danish alternative pop quartet in a SpaceScan, which went on to be the third most popular of the 51 editions of the regular Friday feature last year. This January Betting On The Mouse released this first EP, ‘BOTM’, previewing what’s to come with their debut full length, which they’ll be recording this spring.
Who are they?
Principal songwriter and singer Martha Marie Skou (also on piano) expertly backed by Xian Foo (drums, guitar), Jonathan Aardestrup (bass, harmonica) and Sune Rodt (guitar, ukulele).
How’s the EP?
Drawing on elements from folk, pop, jazz and noise-rock ‘BOTM’ is a cold yet inviting tour of the darker regions of Martha Marie Skou’s soul over four dreamy and grandiose alternative pop songs, carried by an icy melancholy defined by Skou’s hauntingly expressive vocal. It’s ambitious and a very promising first effort.
Check them out if you like:
Compatriots Chimes & Bells and Under Byen, Cat Power, and are in the market for a soundtrack to your downer.
