Mercenary: Metamorphosis
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Metal

For some reason the Danish metal band Mercenary – one of the most respected bands in the Danish metal community with six albums under their sleeves – insist on changing half the lineup between every album they make (guitarist Jakob Mølbjerg is the only founding member remaining), but somehow they still manage to sound like Mercenary. Which is awesome!
Who are they on this album?
René Pedersen (vocals, bass), Jakob Mølbjerg (guitar), Martin Buus (lead guitar, keys) and Morten Løwe (drums).
How’s the album?
On Mercenary’s previous album ‘Architect Of Lies’ bassist René Pedersen proved that he can growl in a way that will make grown men weep, but now he handles clean vocals and high notes pretty damn good as well. He may not have the range of former singer Mikkel Sandager, but he has personality (and personality goes a long way) and a lovely anger in his voice. The songs – as usual – are brilliant and combine ugliness and beauty in a thrash and power metal inferno.
If I had a gun pointed to my head and was asked which Mercenary album I like best (and that almost never happens) I might still say ‘Architect Of Lies’, but ‘Metamorphosis’ is really, really good, has a new darker feeling about it and – if I may go in to details – has one of the best “urgh!”-moments in metal history. Really. Check out ‘Velvet Lies’ in the player below and wait for it to reach 2:56.
Check them out if you like…:
Big, powerful, anthem-y power metal songs with huge riffs and fist pumping choruses… And who doesn’t, really?
