VETO: Crushing Digits
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Rock

The awaited follow up to 2006s critically acclaimed debut, ‘There’s A Beat In All Machines’, from Danish rocktronica quintet VETO more or less picks up where the debut left us, but with one significant change: Where the debut album could be described as rock with elements of electronica, ‘Crushing Digits’ is in sound more “tronica” than “rock” although the rock energy that is at the very core of the band still remains.
‘Crushing Digits’ – the title being a nod to the ones and zeros that control most aspects of our lives today – also sees another change in VETO’s world as they have brought in acclaimed Danish producer Carsten Heller (Nephew, Spleen United among others) to work with them on three songs. Their debut was entirely their own work and it earned Troels Abrahamsen a great reputation for his producing skills.
In the two years that has passed since ‘There’s A Beat In All Machines’ he’s produced a number of Danish acts (As In RebekkaMaria, The Floor Is Made Of Lava among others) under the name SuperTroels and released the electronica solo project, ‘I Know That You Know’, which seems to have had some influence on the direction that VETO have moved into on this second album.
Either way ‘Crushing Digits’ works wonderfully! Not least in first single ‘Built To Fail’ that elegantly bridge the old and new VETO and draws you in with its hard hitting beat and catchy chorus, in ‘Shake’ where drummer Mads Hasager shows exactly what it is he brings to the mix, and in the almost club banging ‘You Say Yes, I Say Yes’. Other highlights counts ‘Spit It Out’ and ‘Duck, Hush And Be Still’ that brings the album to a gentle halt – and you reaching for the repeat button on the remote control.
