Helhorse: For Wolves And Vultures
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Metal

Danish six-piece Helhorse was formed in Copenhagen in 2006 as a stoner/sludge metal band under the name of Dødning (Danish for ghost or goblin). They released an EP in 2009 which created some waves in the Danish metal underground, and last year they changed their name into Helhorse – ‘For Wolves And Vultures’ is their debut album.
Who are they?
Mikkel Wad Larsen (vocal), Aske Kristiansen (vocal, Rhodes), Jakob Møgelcunt (guitar), Stephan C. Krabsen (guitar, backing vocal), Søren Nybo Hansen (bass) and Jesper Bergstedt (drums).
How’s the album?
Screams, growls and clean vocals. Primitive, yet oddly mesmerizing guitar riffs. Plenty of attitude. It has it all – and then some. Mikkel Wad Larsen and Aske Kristiansen share vocal duties and do it like their lives depend on it, sometimes separately and sometimes almost interrupting each other, which gives a nice dynamic feel to the whole thing. And while the guitar riffs may not be technically jaw dropping they are certainly effective, and Jakob Møgelcunt (don’t snicker, that’s his name) and Stephan Krabsen get plenty of solo time to prove their worth. Helhorse are obviously inspired by a range of stoner metal greats, but by throwing in a bit of punk and hardcore here and there they make their sound their own. Oh, and thumbs up for including a Rhodes piano…
