Djerv: Djerv
Categories: Albums • Norway • Rock

We love us some shouty Norwegians here at ALL SCANDINAVIAN – e.g. Skambankt and Honningbarna. Now a new band has been included on the playlist: Djerv, a Norwegian trio who’ve just released their eponymous debut album. And has a female vocalist doing the shouting (and, to be fair, a great deal of singing).
Who are they?
Guitarist Stian Kårstad, formerly of Trelldom, drummer Erlend Gjerde who played with Stonegard and Wardruna, and singer Agnete Kjølsrud of Animal Alpha, who has also sung with Dimmu Borgir.
How’s the album?
It’s dark, it’s aggressive, it’s hard rocking, and quite splendid. When we first mentioned Djerv, I admitted to being equally in love with and scared of Agnete Kjølsrud. After listening to the entire album I’m going to stick by that. The Norwegian damsel has a fetching hoarse voice that can sing quite beautifully, but also scream and sneer in a way that will send shivers down your spine. Think a cross between Shirley Manson and Maja Ivarsson of The Sounds – fathered by Mephisto and on a two-packs-a-day-diet.
One could argue that the nine tracks on ‘Djerv’ are a bit too similar to each other, but in general the album is an awesome serving of hard rock with splashes of metal and plenty of catchy choruses. And even though I think they should stray more away from their formula, I had a hard time picking the Recommended Tracks below, because all nine tracks are good, really…
Check them out if you like:
Skambankt, The Hellacopters, Arch Enemy and shouty women who can probably drink you under the table and beat you at arm wrestling.
