Jacob Faurholt: Are You In The Mood For Love?
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Rock

If you can answer yes to the above question asked by Jacob Faurholt you should seriously consider skipping past this Danish singer/songwriter’s second solo album; it will do you no good. You should, however, seriously consider reading on if you’re on the receiving end of a (bad) breakup or otherwise down in a hole. It might not do you a whole lotta good, but it will fit your state of mind nicely.
Because ‘Are You In The Mood For Love?’ is affective melancholy carried by Faurholt’s frail, aching vocal, underlining the seriousness of love and loneliness investigated in his lyrics, quirky choir arrangements and the sparse, generally well-applied instrumentation courtesy of Faurholt himself and his two friends Jens Kristian Andersen and Kristian Westergård, the latter also assigned producing duties.
As such there’s not much new under the sun, other than the fact that this is Jacob Faurholt’s best work yet following 2007s ‘Hurrah Hurrah’ and 2005s ‘Queen Of Hope’ (with the band Sweetie Pie Wilbur). It’s in essence done-before singer/songwriter sadcore with a dusty neo-folk touch in the veins of Bonnie “Prince” Billy and legendary doomsayer Townes van Zandt, but there’s no denying that the Aarhus-based singer knows how to apply himself to the grand tradition, making ‘Are You In The Mood For Love?’ an often insistingly moving acquaintance.
