Sin Fang Bous: Clangour
Categories: Albums • Iceland • Rock

He has already had significant success with his alternative folk outfit Seabear, who released their acclaimed debut ‘The Ghost That Carried Us Away’ last year, and with this solo effort under the moniker Sin Fang Bous Icelandic Sindri Már Sigfússon further establishes himself as one hell of an interesting musical mind on that – and any – scene.
Written, recorded and performed entirely by Sigfússon in his own studio ‘Clangour’ is sorta like Seabear’s experimenting teen sibling, on the surface unwilling to accept existing rules and norms in the quest for defining a self but still – as the story always goes – subconsciously playing by the book. Here in the underlying organic sense of structure throughout that’s constantly challenged by quirky, sonic and psychedelic attacks.
As in album opener ‘Advent In Ives Garden’, essentially a 4/4 up-tempo strumming pop song riddled with ancient computer game bleeps and scratches, ‘A Fire To Sleep In’ sounding a little like Simon & Garfunkel, only gritty and spheric with an elegant break-beat driving it forward, and the ambitious, delicately roaring closer ‘Lies’.
These are just three, equally superb, examples of what really is Sin Fang Bous’ crowning achievement: The brilliant balance between elaborate, well, noise and beautiful pop. A combination resulting in (almost) always enticing songs and really just one of those albums that can’t but make you feel gooood. Like that first stretch in the morning…
