Kings In Exile: Here’s To The Future

Categories: AlbumsDenmarkRock

Words:

This Danish five piece released their great debut album, the garage rock‘n’rolling ‘High On The Mainline’, in 2006 under the name Fast Gallows. Due to legal issues they have changed their name but that is pretty much all that has changed. Because Kings In Exile certainly don’t reinvent rock‘n’roll and their lyrics are… Well, forgettable at best (“The sky is blue / The grass is green / You are you / But I’m not me”… Eat your heart out Shakespare!). ‘Here’s To The Future’ is still a kick ass album, however. Let me explain why:

Who are they?
Rasmus, Mikkel, Dennis, Niels and Micha – with all drums played by Mads Fjeldvig. Production is handled by Anders Ruby, mastering by Jan Eliasson.

How’s the album?
The Danish restaurant Noma has won the prestigious award Best Restaurant In The World twice. They serve dishes like ‘Buckwheat crepe with smoked cheese and bleak roe’ and ‘Buttermilk jelly, malt and sugar beet syrup’. That’s all fine and dandy and I would like to try it someday. But you know what I also like from time to time? A hamburger. ‘Here’s To The Future’ is the musical equivalent of a hamburger. A great hamburger, mind you, with a huge chunk of cow, bacon, cheese, chili mayo and whatnot. It may not be spectacular, but when you’re in the mood it hits just the right spot.

Frontman Rasmus Pedersen has a great, kind of generic rock voice. He reminds you of someone on all songs, but it’s someone different every time. Sometimes he sounds a bit like Chris Cornell (when he rocked), on ‘What Does It Take’ he reminds me of Mike Patton and so on. The rock’n'roll songs with dashes of glam and garage are built around great guitar riffs, instant singalong-able choruses and smart arsed yet well dosed guitar solos. That’s a tried-and-tested formula, but then again: If it ain’t broken… All hail to the kings.

Check them out if you like:
Velvet Revolver, Slash’s solo album, Alter Bridge and Motörhead.
