The Gypsies: One Hand Up
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Urban

Something right is going on in Danish hip hop these years. Four months after all star outfit Booty Cologne rocked the scene with ‘2007 B.C.’, organic soul/funk hoppers The Gypsies released this great debut.
‘One Hand Up’ sports cameos by American hip hop underground heavyweights Roc C, Oh No, Wildchild, Dudley Perkins, Guilty Simpson and DJ Romes plus one-third of Danish hip hop act Outlandish, Waqas Ali Qadri, but all credit must go to the six members of The Gypsies. MC’s Shaka Loveless and Ronco Kissi lay down superior vocals on the equally superior organic beats that does nothing but delight; especially in bouncer ‘DK’, the freaky ‘One Hand Up’, frisky ‘Sun’s In My Face’ and first single ‘Part Of Me’ that shows that The Gypsies are not afraid of being pop.
They also deserve credit for the lyrics, because unlike most hip hop acts they dare touch on bigger subjects than themselves, their dicks (and where they’ve been), bling and guns. The see it as their – and everybody else’s – duty to take a stand and take active part in society and the efforts to change what needs changing.
The Gypsies have been part of the live circuit for some time and has already built a reputation as a great live act both in and outside of Denmark, supporting acts like The Roots, The Fugees, The Game and Outlandish along the way. They’ve taken their time finishing this album, but it’s finally here and worth every penny!
