WhoMadeWho: The Plot

WhoMadeWho

They’ve made a big name for themselves as an excellent live band, usually dressed in skintight harlequin costumes, remixed artists like Digitalism, Hot Chip and Peaches, been remixed by The Rapture, Noze and Hot Chip (it goes both ways) among others and their debut signature hit ‘Space For Rent’ has been a regular feature on Josh Homme’s (Queens Of The Stone Age) set list for quite some time.

Now, four years on from their eponymous debut, Danish disco house ‘n funk ‘n rock trio WhoMadeWho are ready with another playfully anarchistic genre hybrid, ‘The Plot’, embracing Tomas Høffding’s (bass/voc) background in rock, principal songwriter Jeppe Kjellberg’s (guitar/voc) ditto in avant-garde jazz on an electronica foundation courtesy of drummer Tomas Barfod (also Tomboy and Filur).

Brilliant disco first single and title track leaves no doubt who we’re dealing with, following aforementioned ‘Space For Rent’ perfectly, and ‘This Train’ delights with its gritty, blues-rock riff and Negro spiritual feel. Tight ‘n thumping ‘Office Clerk’ is everything an office clerk is not, especially fun, ‘I Lost My Voice’ is grand pop, ‘Ode To Joy’ an oasis amidst the disco fury, fading straight into, well, bizarre 60s rock/minimal electro instrumental ‘Motown Bizarre’ which adds more to the playful feel of ‘The Plot’ than the album as such, before melancholic ‘Working After Midnight’ ends it all with a nod to Kraftwerk.

If you can love just one thing about WhoMadeWho it is that there seems to be no creative boundaries between the three. It is, however, also their Achilles heel in terms of creating the “perfect” album – if that’s an ambition to go by in a digital single age – but there’s no denying that both their debut and ‘The Plot’ are insanely charming and original.
