Private: My Secret Lover

Theft is honest business, or at least so it seems to be for ace producer-singer-songwriter Thomas Troelsen when digging in to his latest project, Private. With two of his old band mates in late Danish hipsters, Superheroes (1996-2006), he has set out to create nothing short of the perfect pop album for the dance floor, and with ‘My Secret Lover’ they have come close to achieving just that with (involuntary) help from two of the all time greats: Prince and Michael Jackson.
Singer Troelsen sounds like a clone of the two, complete with Michael Jackson’s trademark moans, and Private’s happy-go-lucky pop takes you right back to when synthesizers and hand claps ruled the world. ‘We Got Some Breaking Up To Do’ and ‘Let’s Make Love (Underneath The Apple Tree)’ are Prince A.D. ‘Little Red Corvette’, while horrible candy-floss ballad ‘That Boy Is Hurting You’ sounds like MJ when he thought he was the one to heal the world.
‘My Secret Lover’ is a classic case of Style over Substance (the mantra of much of the 80s), but either way you can’t look beyond the pop qualities Private posses. So if you’re in the mood for some light entertainment and perhaps a little dancing this is not a bad choice.
