The Raveonettes: Lust, Lust, Lust
Categories: Albums • Denmark • Rock

When Rolling Stone Magazine’s David Fricke in 2002 proclaimed The Raveonettes an act to keep your eyes and ears on, the duo became one the most hyped Danish bands in recent years. The hype and The Raveonettes’ dogmatic noise-noir debut, ‘Whip It On’ (2002), lead to a – according to singer-guitarist-songwriter-producer Sune Wagner economically very sweet – deal with major American record label Columbia the same year. Two albums followed, ‘Chain Gang Of Love’ (2003) and ‘Pretty In Black’ (2005), but The Raveonettes last year decided against renewing the contract.
Now The Raveonettes are almost back where they started – in more than one sense. They’ve gone back to smaller independent labels, A:Larm Music in Denmark, Fierce Panda in the UK and Vice Records in the US, and musically ‘Lust, Lust, Lust’ is seated neatly between the noise rock that made up the first two albums and the more accessible, almost poppy, third ‘Pretty In Black’. And the result is excellent!
The 1950s and film noir references are still a big part of The Raveonettes’ picture and from the bleak reverb-ridden kick off in ‘Aly Walk With Me’ to the Twin Peaksy last song ‘The Beat Dies’ we are interchangeably caressed by catchy 50s-60s inspired pop and thrown to the ground by heavy white-noise attacks. Where ‘Pretty In Black’ sported some high profile guest stars (Ronnie Spector, Suicide’s Martin Rev and Maureen Tucker of the Velvet Underground), ‘Lust, Lust, Lust’ is played, recorded and produced entirely by Sune Wagner and Sharin Foo.
Oh, and the lyrics? Take one look at the album title and see if you can do the math.
