12 Danish MAP tracks of 2012
Aaaand we’re back…! After short vacation and consequent recuperation we’re ready to kick off 2013 with our 2012 year-end retrospect with some free music, giving you a package with the 12 Danish artists and tracks that appeared as part of the Music Alliance Pact (MAP) mixtapes throughout 2012. MAP is, as you might know, a network counting 40 blogs from as many countries around the globe who have joined forced to bring people a free taste of what’s going on musically in their respective nations on the 15 of every month, where ALL SCANDINAVIAN represents Denmark.
Tomorrow we stray shortly from the year-end business with 2013s first installment of MAP, but we’re back on the looking back track the following days with a look at the most popular videos and tracks before we give you our list of the 20 Best Albums of 2012 as we heard it on Friday. ‘Till then we hope you’ll enjoy these 12 Danish MAP artists and tracks, all available as separate downloads or as part of one easy-to-handle zip compilation here or at the bottom.
Nelson Can – Apple Pie
Danish girl-trio Nelson Can release their eponymous debut EP this month as part of a triple EP release with The Freudian Slip and Echo Me. Punk aesthetics spoon with pop flair and hipster cool on their first single ‘Apple Pie’, which reaffirms that apples are indeed a good thing. Like the girls on Facebook and check out the video for Apple Pie on YouTube.

Spleen United – Bright Cities Keep Me Awake
“We are still wild animals,” Spleen United proclaim on ‘Bright Cities Keep Me Awake’, from their long-awaited and impressive third full-length, ‘School Of Euphoria’. It’s a sentiment carrying truth and one somewhat defining for principal songwriter and frontman Bjarke Niemann’s lyrical appendage to the dark, synthesized rock reminiscing 90s electro, house and (euro)dance, which makes ‘School Of Euphoria’ a rather despondent, while immensely awesome, listen.

Ring Them Bells – When I Hear That Whistle Blow
A MAP exclusive, ‘When I Hear That Whistle Blow’ by Ring Them Bells is only the second great taste of the quartet’s loud combination of 90s noise-rock and 60s psych-pop in circulation. The other, titled ‘Technicolor’, is also available for free at the band’s website, and both will most likely be part of Ring Them Bells’ debut album slated for release later this spring.

Lydmor – Lamppost Light
This acoustic version of Lamppost Light was (and is) originally a video shot in a theater in Denmark’s second city, Aarhus. But since I really, really like Lydmor aka Jenny Rossander’s take on her otherwise electrofied pop self, I had my people tell her people to give all you people the song as a MAP exclusive. Oh, and if you want to watch the video here it is.

SLOWOLF – See U In My Dreams
This summer Andreas Asingh, one third of lauded electro-pop outfit SMALL, will release his debut as SLOWOLF. Not much is known about the project but he says that black metal, hip hop and dream pop will unite, perhaps for the first time, on the album which will also feature Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan and a chorus written by a seven-year-old boy. Here’s the excellent first single See U In My Dreams, a Music Alliance Pact exclusive download.

Penny Police – As Long As You Watch My Heart
The purchase of an electric autoharp in 2009 was the beginning of what was to become Penny Police – the alias of singer and songwriter Marie Fjeldsted – and a lauded first album titled The Broken, The Beggar, The Thief (released in Denmark earlier this year), from which the excellent As Long As You Watch My Heart is offered here as a MAP exclusive download.

Kúra – Anchor
With the amazing vocal of Fanney Ósk Þórisdóttir as a general highlight, Danish/Icelandic trio Kúra’s debut Halfway To The Moon is a dark, melancholic and rather enticing affair mixing electronica, trip hop, dub and (indie) rock. Here’s single Anchor, co-produced by acclaimed DJ and producer Buda (Lulu Rouge) and accompanied by this beautiful video by Kristian Touborg and Jesper Dalgaard.

Released in 2011 in Denmark, Alcoholic Faith Mission’s fourth full-length, Ask Me This, is now available worldwide and thus there are no good reasons not to check out the outfit’s alternative pop. Begin here with the excellent Running With Insanity.

Indianna Dawn – I Always Miss You
There’s been a new wave of Americana and country music sweeping Denmark in the past few years (I say ‘new’ – I don’t really think there ever was one before) and one representative of this is the quintet Indianna Dawn, centered around singer and songwriter Dianna Dønns. MAP exclusive download I Always Miss You is from their great debut album Somebody’s Dead.

Kjartan Bue – Rosen And Danny
Half Norwegian, half Danish and raised in Denmark, Kjartan Bue debuts his five-track alt-country EP Man Riding Backwards on November 15 (I’ve heard it and it’s great). Here’s Rosen And Danny as a MAP exclusive download, and do make sure you also check out the title track and closing ballad Old Woman here – the latter is also up for free download.

The Savage Rose – Soldier On The Run
On Love And Freedom, legendary Danish rock outfit The Savage Rose’s 21st album since the eponymous debut in 1968, frontwoman Annisette and band stage love and politics on an amazing backdrop of hauntingly soulful rock as it was done when The Savage Rose were a young band, defined and taken to magical heights by her breathtaking vocal and a performance I could never do justice in words. Here’s Soldier On The Run and because it’s anniversary-time it is of course a mindbogglingly exclusive download for the Music Alliance Pact.

The Woken Trees – Orders
I know December is supposed to be all about lights and happy times, but here’s a MAP exclusive track and a band that is almost exactly the opposite. There are six of them, they call themselves The Woken Trees and they’ve recorded an awesomely bleak and hard-hitting post-punk debut album which is sure to make waves everywhere when released on January 28.
