Good stuff keeps hitting the ALL SCANDINAVIAN inbox, so here’s another load of videos and tracks (freebies included) for you to hopefully enjoy, courtesy of Turboweekend, John Olav Nilsen & Gjengen, TV OFF, Jónsi and Teitur among others. All you have to do, is read, watch, listen and download, so get cracking – and feel free to let us know what you think…
JOHN OLAV NILSEN & GJENGEN (NO) (Photo)
December 1 John Olav Nilsen & Gjengen released this first single, ‘Shrekkfilm’ (“horror film”), off his sophomore effort ‘Nærmere Kommer Du Ikke’ (“As close as you’ll get”, or something to that effect), slated for release in February 2011 and facing the challenge of following up on the excellent and acclaimed debut ‘For Sant Til Å Være Godt’ (“Too true to be good”).
PEARL FICTION (SE)
This summer I featured Swedish disco popper Pearl Fiction aka Per Störby in a SpaceScan saying that it was pretty hard not to think Prince when listening to his track ‘Insomnia’. It still is, but it’s okay, and here’s the video for said song, created by PAM.
TURBOWEEKEND (DK)
With a little help from a bunch of friends, great Danish synthrockers Turboweekend recorded a five song EP, ‘Bound’, this summer, which they’re giving away for free on their website in return for a little info and your email address. And if you’re in your generous mood, you can make a donation of which half will go to UNICEF and half to the band. Also, the guys have launched a “Fan Made” section, where you can make your own remixes of Turboweekend tracks, create alternative artwork and your own videos and upload it for everyone to enjoy. Here’s ‘Into The Pavement’ featuring Efterklang’s Casper Clausen, and when you’re done listening go download ‘Bound’ on turboweekend.com – and be sure to check out the Fan Made section (link is in the menu).
HOPE I DIE VIRGIN (NO)
Excellent song and beautifully simple video, directed by Øystein Monsen and showcasing classic Norwegian sweater fashion, courtesy of Oslo alternative rockers Hope I Die Virgin. The track’s titled ‘At Crude Garbage Falls’ and is the first taste of the album ‘Is Forever No Way’ slated for release next year.
ON VOLCANO (SF)
Back in 2008 Finnish quartet On Volcano released their debut EP ‘My Sleep Was Filled With Dreams’ and now they have a second EP, aptly titled ‘New Blood’, out and available as free download. Melodic indierock with post-rock and shoegaze touches is their game, and they play it well. Check out ‘Mission’ in the player and then head on over to onvolcano.com for your free digital copy of ‘New Blood’.
THE MALPRACTICE (DK)
A bit more than a month ago I shared the remarkable debut album ‘Tectonics’ by The Malpractice aka Johannes Gammelby (I Am Bones, Beta Satan) with you, and here’s the video for great single ‘Boss Stallion’, directed by Christian Dahl and featuring a big, scruffy teddy bear, and a track you can download for free here!
RIDDARNA (SE)
October saw the release of Swedish rock trio Riddarna’s (The Knights) four-song debut EP ‘Släpp Allt, Glöm Allt’ (“Let everything go, forget everything”), and if you’re in to gritty and heavy stoner-rock with lyrics in Swedish, this is a real treat. Here’s a taste in the shape of ‘Sjuk’, and if you want more they’re streaming the EP in full on MySpace.
TV OFF (SF)
This has been sitting in my inbox for quite a while, but as I always say: Late is better than never. Anyway, we’re dealing with the lovable Finnish electropop duo TV OFF, who let this fun and colorful video for ‘Boogieman’, taken from their debut album ‘Music Machine’, loose on the internet a couple of months back. On top they’re offering free downloads of a Sharkslayer remix of ‘Boogieman’ (Right Click + Save As here!), and one of their very first songs titled ‘Bird’ (Right Click + Save As here!).
JÓNSI (ISL)
This year Sigur Rós frontman Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson released his solo debut ‘Go’, and now he’s offering the film/live album package ‘Go Live’ through his website. The double treat includes reworked live versions of all tracks from the album as well as versions of all the new songs he’s been playing on the tour, which is documented in the film. To give you a feel for what’s in store for you with this release, Jónsi is now offering a freebie in the shape of a beautiful live version of ‘New Piano Song’, available for download here!
ELIAS & THE WIZZKIDS (SE)
Back in September I gave you the lowdown on Elias & The Wizzkids’ lush pop debut album ‘Just Do It!’, and here’s the soooo 80s video for single ‘Waste Of Time’, directed by Mats Udd and in fact created with VHS technology. Hope you dig it, and if you like the song you can download it with a Right Click + Save As here!.
TEITUR (FO)
I’ll end this edition of From the Inbox on a Christmassy note with Faroese favorite Teitur’s rendition of John Lennon’s classic ‘Happy Christmas (War Is Over)’, taken from the Christmas album ‘Fra Danske Hjerter’ (“From Danish hearts”) which also features contributions from The Kissaway Trail, Figurines, Fallulah and The Blue Van among others.
