Q&A: Kellermensch – Awkward aggression and melancholy
Categories: Denmark • Features • Rock

More often than not journalists have a very fixed idea of the story they want when interviewing bands and artists, something reflected by their questions. But what would happen if bands had their say completely free of any journalistic interference?
We decided to try it out, so here’s the first installment of ALL SCANDINAVIANs soon-to-be-infamous Q&A interview series where Sebastian Wolff, guitarist and vocalist of Danish rock quintet Kellermensch who release their debut on Monday, answers the purest questions we have in any language:
Who?
“Kellermensch is a five piece rock band ready to release our self titled debut album. Our songs are dusty and dirty tales of emotional stress and show a combination of awkward aggression and melancholy”.
Where?
“We are from the small town of Esbjerg where we began playing together in 2006”.
What?
“The album contains 10 tracks that are each painful examinations of a fragile mind performed by a simple rock-instrumentation, but joined by pump-organ, violins, double bass and piano creating a unique sound. It also contains two bold interpretations of songs by Tom Waits and Neil Young and features artwork by Australian painter Tony Clark (who has also decorated a Nick Cave album)”.
Why?
“We get our inspiration from a combination of singer-songwriter acts (such as Tom Waits and Nick Cave), literature and painting, and progressive rock and metal acts (such as Neurosis and Tool)”.

Neat idea. Always interesting to hear what the bands have to say and not some journo out to get the next NME cover story.
and these guys sound quite interesting as well. Takes balls to cover Waits and young…
Hello band, enjoyed watching you guys in London on the 12th January. Great to meet Jan and Christian. And now my question, as I’m such a big fan of Neil Young, and your cover of Don’t Let It Bring You Down is so good…I just wondered what your favourite Neil Young album and song is? I think my favourite song is I Believe In You, from After The Gold Rush, and I suppose After The Gold Rush is also my favourite album, as my Dad introduced it to me when I was younger. If it’s possible, I believe it is a timeless piece.
thank you.
Hi Tom,
Good to hear you had a good time at the gig in London – Kellermensch really is a great live act…
About your question: I think you should direct it to the band directly via either their MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/kellermensch) or website (http://kellermensch.com/). Although I hope they read this blog I think chances for a reply are bigger that way.
