SpaceScan09 #13: Kiasmos and Yes Please!
Categories: Electronica • Features • Finland • Iceland • Rock

Dang! It’s Friday and we’ve got a 13 going on. Sorry to all superstitious readers, but it was bound to happen. Hopefully the great tunes in this week’s SpaceScan from new Icelandic minimal techno duo Kiasmos (aka Ólafur Arnalds and Bloodgroup’s Janus Rasmussen) and Finnish indierock quartet Yes Please! will ease the pain should stuff hit the fan.
Kiasmos (ISL)
A new project by brilliant neoclassical composer Ólafur Arnalds and Bloodgroup main man Janus Rasmussen, Kiasmos have set out to make their mark on the techno scene. Two tracks, ’65’ and ‘Walled’ (both out on a 12” split with Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles March 30), are streaming on MySpace and I’d think even non-techno speaking people can find joy in the repetitive, minimalist and yet strangely organic feeling tracks. I know I do.

Yes Please! (SF) (Photo)
This Finnish quartet state London, New York and Tokyo as their influences and is it not hard to conjure big city imagery for inner eyes when listening to their raucous indierock displaying an impressive knack for pop hooks. The Strokes, Talking Heads and The Libertines are all with the band, who’s named themselves after the answer to the question naturally arising when their music stops: “You want more?” Yes, Please!

WHO DO YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD HEAR?
Although we spend a lot of time out there, we can’t claim to have heard every band on MySpace, so please feel free to recommend bands – Scandinavian, of course – you think everybody deserve to hear. We do reserve the right not to feature your band(s), but we guarantee to check them out. Drop links to: spacescan (a) allscandinavian.com
